THEARC Farm

THEARC Farm

THEARC FARM is an urban farm operating as a community project of Building Bridges Across the River (BBAR) and was developed to involve our community in nature, nutrition, and healthy eating.

The farm consists of 25 raised beds, 8 in-ground rows, a culinary herb garden, medicinal herb garden, an eighteen-tree orchard, community compost bins, a hoop house and a pollinator garden. THEARC Farm’s mission is to provide training and support for urban farmers and growers, educate the community about wellness and nutrition and provide affordable organic produce through our CSA and local Farmers Markets.

THEARC Farm is committed to employing agroecological farming practices that will help to restore and support our local ecosystem and contribute to the health of people in our community.

In 2017 THEARC Farm will focus on

  1. Providing support to local urban growers and farmers through training, workshops and networking events.
  2. Continuing to build our capacity to provide organic produce to the community through the C.R.I.S.P. CSA Program and partnership with local farms and farmers markets.
  3. Hosting a series of wellness workshops that will be taught by local chefs, herbalists, yogis, gardeners, and nutritionists.

Urban Farmers and Growers

THEARC Farm is committed to responding to the increased interest in farming and gardening as both a form of employment and a means of providing food for families and the community. THEARC Farm will host 10 adult workshops this season that will focus on providing participants with beginner level training in composting, soil health, companion planting, garden plot construction and design, and more.

THEARC Farm will also host events and workshops that will assist with building capacity amongst local farmers and growers.

THEARC Farm is also looking for serious volunteers to join our volunteer program. This program is for individuals who are interested in entering the field of urban agriculture or who would like to grow in their own yards and would like hands-on training. Please e-mail dom.hosack@gmail.com for more information.

CSA and Farmers Markets

The C.R.I.S.P. CSA program was designed to provide locally grown organic produce to families in Ward 7 and 8. This low-cost program provides weekly shares of produce grown at THEARC Farm and other local farms.  THEARC Farm is able to supply a majority of the vegetable and herbs provided in the CSA shares.  The farm is in the process of expanding its orchard in order to provide more fruit. This year THEARC Farm will partner with local farms to provide add-on products such as eggs and an expanded fruit selection.

This year we will provide pick-up sites at THEARC Farm and Turning Natural in Ward 8. The application for C.R.I.S.P. will open Feb 24th, 2017. Click Here to fill out an application today!

Community Wellness Workshop Series

THEARC Farm wants to tap into the intellectual wealth of community members East of the River, by hosting a series of community-led wellness workshops and classes. If you are a nutritionist, yogi, farmer, herbalist, chef or wellness coach and you would like to provide a workshop or series at THEARC Farm this year.

Youth Education

We work with the partner organizations at THEARC to provide educational programming for youth who attend Levine, Boys and Girls Club, Washington Girls School and Washington Ballet. If your child attends one of these programs, during the school year or summer, they will get a chance to visit the farm and learn about agriculture and health and nutrition.

We provide field trip opportunities for local schools and organizations. Please contact Violet King at violetmking@gmail.com, if you are interested in setting up a field trip. Field trips are scheduled on Friday’s for local schools and Saturdays for groups and organizations.
